"My family in Holand"

The unique history of this magnificent Spanish portrait painter from the beginning of this century, ANtonio Ortiz Echague, commences with his studies in Paris, Rome and Holland where he married a dutch girl. During the years he lived in Spain he became famous for being the portrait painter of all the nobility including the royal family. What is astounding is that during the painter's last 9 years he lived with his family in the hacienda "La Holanda", in the middle of the Pampa, where he constructed for himself a studio at a distance in the middle of the forest. When he died in 1942 his ashes were scattered over the field as he had requested. Today the hacienda has become a cultural center for artists and those interested in studying his paintings.
