Located within the municipality of Atotonilco El Grande in the State of Hidalgo and formed by basalts, this plateau is foremost agricultural. The inhabitants of this region are the direct descendants of pre-Hispanic Otomi indians. All land in this region has been turned into agro-idustrial settlements, mainly dedicated to the production of nuts and pine nuts. The group of buildings which constitute the convent of Saint Augustine is outstanding with its plateresque stonework facade, whereupon is portrayed the figure representing the origin of the name of Atotonilco -a clay pot over a fire with stones from which steam is rising. The plateau has an altitude of 2,080 mts. |
