Located 54 kms before getting to the City of Queretaro, it is one of the world's largest rocky monoliths, the third of its kind on an international level, after the Rock of Gibraltar (Spain) and the Sugar Loaf (Brazil). Its heighth is 385 mts;itsgeological formation belongs to the Jurassic period, and it is comprised of several layers of slate. On its summit (2,515 mts above sea level) is an ancient hermitage with a cross that is brought down every January 20th (Saint Sebastian day) by the inhabitants of the small colonial village lying at its base and also named Bernal. Because of its characteristics it has been used as a setting for several films by Mexican moviemakers -"Las Fuerzas Vivas", "El Lugar sín Límites", "El Gallo de Oro", etc. |
