In the Mexico of the 40's, and the aftermath of war the dancing halls were very popular as peoplediscovered in the mambos, rhumbas, "danzones" and other music played therein, an ideal way to forget about problems and a healthy way to enjoy themselves to the rhythms of the orquestras. Today the 3 most famous dance halls in Mexico City are: The Colonia (1922), the oldest and has two settings -a great dance floor and a patio. The California (1954) with an enormous hall of great dimensions whose dance floor all but fills it. Los Angeles Salon (1938) who having acquired great fame coined the phrase "who doesn't know Los Angeles doesn't know Mexico". In these dance halls the tradition of dancing the "danzón", mambo and rhumba with live orchestras and no sale of alcoholic beverages is kept up.
