Antique kiosk of "Plaza de Armas", art nouveau stile and french ironwork of last century.

The first smiths in Mexico, were artisan soldiers that came with Hernan Cortes. They implanted their trade using Spanish techniques, tools and materials. In the 16th century many officers immigrated to the City of Puebla, where even then it was noted for its excellent ironwork (windows, iron parts, railings, gates, balconies). In 1552 the first important iron mine was disscovered in Durango. Since the start of the colony, the predominant ironwork styles were: Gothic and Renassaince, copying the Spanish models. With the passing of time each city developed its own style as in Guanajuato, Puebla, and Durango. Other decorative items were nails, knockers and trunk handles, ornaments for doors and the entrance gates to the atriums of many temples.
