The origin of Jai Ali ("happy feast") goes back to the past century and the Basque woodsmen, then at the beginning of this century the game had great acceptance both in Cuba and in Mexico at the Frontón Mexico where there is an association of professional pelotaris. After the serve at a speed of up to 300 kms per hour, seconds after the ball bounces on the front wall, it projects itself as a bullet towards the backstop's zone, who lunges with extended arm towards the back, the pelotari braces the soaring missile with the curved basket nestling and thrusting it towards the frontispiece. There are those who climb up to 7 mts over the supporting wall. Games are played in pairs (reds against blues), which go to 25 or 30 scoring. The betting gives this sport a special atmosphere which can be felt in the tribunes. Among the different types of fronton -racquet, shovel and hand- in Mexico the one played is the point basket (handmade out of osier rods and wooden ribs). These measure from 65 to 68 cms and are fitted to a leather glove; thus constructed they will last for a period of play of around 30 to 40 hours. |
