Beautiful sculpturecarved in wooden, part of a house door.

As of Colonial times the great carved wooden doors where an indication of nobility and power. The principal antique samples remaining in colonial cities in Mexico are the work of wood crafstmen, many of them indians, that learned their craft in the convents founded by the Spaniards. Following the architectural trend of the times, at the beginning of the colony (16th century), Gothic is what predominates, with vertical and straight features and only very few of this example survive. In the 17th century with the blooming of mines, there emerge those influenced by the Plateresque style -geometric panels with straight lines. Curved lines begin with the Mexican Barroque in the 18th century, with mudejar influence and sculptured carvings. By mid 19th century there is no defined style although they are influenced by a French trend which predominated in that period. The best examples are found in the most traditional cities such as Guadalajara, Queretaro and Zacatecas.
