Exploiter and victor of the Xaltepec hill on the Santa Catarina mountain range , where to obtains black volcanic gravel for the avenues and highways if Mexico

Stonework is one of man's most ancient activities. In Mexico the work on stone -both on calcareous ("cantera") as well as volcanic ("tezontle")- is outstanding. Pre-hispanic stonework together with methods brought over by the Spaniards resulted in an exalted decoration ofbas-reliefs on the facades of temples and buildings throughout the country. It was during the baroque period when stonework adopted the most complicated forms in columns, pilasters and in a variety of sculptures. Subsequently this style was developed by the Spanish architect, Benito de Churriguera, attaining a richness and beauty not seen in any other part of the world thus giving way to the Churrigueresque.
